2023 NASA UAP Study: The Space Agency''''s Bold Step into UAP Research

In June 2022, NASA announced the formation of an independent UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) study team—marking the first time in the space agency’s history that it officially ventured into this long-stigmatized field.

The team consisted of 16 members, including former astronaut Scott Kelly, astrophysicist David Spergel (team chair), oceanographer Paula Bontempi, and other top experts. The team held a public meeting on May 31, 2023, which was NASA’s first open discussion of UAP.

In September 2023, the team released its final report, offering several recommendations: using satellite remote sensing technology to more systematically collect UAP data, developing AI-based identification algorithms, and encouraging commercial pilots to report sightings without fear of stigma. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated: “The door of oversight has been opened.”
