1950s Kirtland AFB UFO Wave: Overflights of Nuclear Research Facilities

In the 1950s, Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico was a key partner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, housing a nuclear weapons storage facility. In 1954, base guards reported seeing a disc-shaped object silently flying over the nuclear weapons storage area, triggering the highest alert. In 1957, base radar operators detected a large object hovering directly above the nuclear weapons storage facility—visible to the naked eye as “a round metallic object.” These incidents were classified as “unexplained” by Project Blue Book.
