In April 1975, a UFO military standoff incident occurred in Taiwan that remains classified to this day—Taiwan’s Air Force radar station detected an unidentified object flying over a certain air force base in the south. Senior military officials urgently activated emergency procedures, and there were even reports of preparations to open fire and shoot it down.

According to accounts from retired military personnel and partially declassified documents, the incident took place around dusk one day. A radar station of Taiwan’s Air Force in the Pingtung area first detected an unidentified target entering from the direction of the Taiwan Strait at extremely high speed. This target did not match any known civilian or military flight plans.

As the target approached land, it suddenly dropped altitude sharply, descending from 6,000 meters to about 500 meters—a maneuver that shocked the air defense radar operators, as no conventional aircraft could perform such a rapid descent.

The base immediately went into combat readiness, and fighter pilots received orders for an emergency takeoff. However, when the fighters approached the target, it accelerated away at an extremely fast speed, with acceleration capabilities far exceeding the limits of Taiwan’s Air Force F-5E fighters at the time.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense later established an investigation team, but ultimately did not release detailed conclusions to the public. According to recollections from some retired officers, the investigation report at the time mentioned that the target’s “flight performance was beyond the reach of human technology.” This report has still not been fully declassified.

This incident has circulated for years within Taiwan’s UFO community, with the most detailed description coming from a retired Air Force radar officer using the pseudonym “Wang Liwen” in the early 2000s. He published his firsthand account in the journal of the Taiwan UFO Research Society—he was one of the operators on duty that night. He said the entire base was personally commanded by a major general, and the atmosphere that night was so tense that “my fingers were sweating.”

The Taiwan UFO Research Society has been pushing for the full declassification of this 1975 document, but Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has so far only released insignificant sections of the files.
