In January 2009, the peaceful life of residents in Morristown, New Jersey was disrupted. For several consecutive nights, inexplicable red and green lights appeared in the sky—they moved slowly overhead, sometimes forming V-shaped formations. These “drones” appeared for a week, sparking massive media attention and an FBI investigation.

The initial sightings occurred on the evening of January 5th. The Morristown Police Department’s dispatch center received multiple calls from residents reporting “five glowing objects forming a square surrounding a red dot” above the rooftops. Police dispatched a helicopter to investigate, but the lights disappeared when the helicopter arrived. The following night at the same time, the lights reappeared.

The incident immediately became headlines in local and national media. CNN and Fox News both covered it. Some believed this was one of the oldest UFO activities on Earth, while others thought it was a secret US military test.

But the story took a dramatic turn in April 2009. Three young men from New Jersey—Joe Rudy, Chris Russo, and John Diaz—claimed to be the perpetrators of the incident. They said they used remote-controlled helicopters and aviation lights to create the lights, purely for fun and to test society’s reaction to UFOs.

However, this “confession” did not end the controversy. Many local residents and UFO researchers did not believe this explanation—they pointed out that some sighting reports appeared before the self-proclaimed hoaxers’ “first operation.” Moreover, some witnesses described objects as large as a bus, unlike small remote-controlled helicopters.

Although the FBI investigated the matter, it ultimately released no conclusions. To this day, the Morristown UFO remains a controversial case—supporters say it was a genuine UFO phenomenon wrongly labeled as a hoax, while skeptics argue it was clearly a prank by three kids amplified by media hype.
