In late 1981, a small valley called Hessdalen in central Norway began experiencing completely inexplicable light phenomena. These lights appeared frequently at night, and sometimes even during the day. The most unique aspect is that this phenomenon has persisted to this day, making it the only sustained UFO phenomenon globally that scientists have monitored long-term.

Residents of the Hessdalen valley first reported seeing strange lights in the autumn of 1981. The light orbs are typically white or yellow, but sometimes red and blue lights appear. They are roughly the size of a car and can float and move between the mountain peaks on either side of the valley. Sometimes the orbs hover very steadily for hours, while other times they move at high speed and suddenly disappear.

By 1983, the phenomenon had reached its peak—over 20 sightings reported annually. The Norwegian UFO research organization UFO-Norge and several scientists decided to establish an official monitoring station. This research project, called the Hessdalen Project, is still operational today.

In the 1990s, Italian scientist Professor Massimo Teodorani and Norwegian Dr. Bjørn Gitle Hauge began installing advanced instruments in the Hessdalen valley, including spectrometers, laser rangefinders, and cameras. They successfully captured multiple occurrences and movements of the light orbs, recording extremely valuable scientific data.

Analysis results show that these light orbs can generate immense energy in a very short time—once measuring a power output exceeding 10,000 watts. Their spectra indicate the presence of multiple elements, including calcium and iron, which should not normally exist in the air. Even more peculiar is that the appearance of the light orbs affects the local geomagnetic field.

Although some scientists have proposed that the Hessdalen Lights might be a phenomenon called “piezoelectricity”—generated by quartzite in the valley under crustal pressure—this theory cannot fully explain all observed characteristics.

Today, the Hessdalen valley still has an automated monitoring station that records any light phenomena in real time. It is the only location in the world with over 20 years of scientific monitoring of a UFO-related phenomenon and serves as the best case study of a “persistent UFO phenomenon.”
