In late September 1989, an event shook the entire nation in the city of Voronezh, Soviet Union — as many as hundreds of people claimed to have seen a giant spaceship land in a city park, with alien beings 3 meters tall emerging from it. Most notably, the official Soviet media TASS and the Academy of Sciences both reported and investigated the incident.

The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on September 27 near a park in the southern part of Voronezh. Witnesses saw a huge pink-glowing sphere descending from the sky — they described it as about 200 to 300 meters in diameter, hovering at an altitude of roughly 100 meters above the park.

Multiple families in the park — including adults and children — observed a humanoid creature about 3 meters tall, wearing a silver spacesuit and copper-colored boots, descending from the sphere to the ground. Witnesses said these beings moved as if “floating,” accompanied by a small robot.

Dr. Alexei Semenov, a researcher from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, told a local newspaper: “This incident cannot be ignored because there are too many independent witnesses.” TASS news agency made history by officially reporting a UFO event for the first time in the Soviet Union, causing an international media sensation.

The KGB (Soviet State Security Committee) also intervened in the investigation. Although the Soviet government had always maintained a secretive stance on UFO topics, the scale of the Voronezh incident was too large for authorities to cover up. Parts of the KGB’s investigation report were later made public, revealing “inexplicable physical traces” found at the landing site.

Four depressions about 20 centimeters in diameter were discovered at the scene, arranged in a perfect rectangular pattern. The surrounding grass showed signs of abnormal heat damage, and leaves in the area exhibited unusual withering, as if exposed to high-energy radiation.

The Voronezh incident holds milestone significance in the history of Soviet UFO research — it is the first UFO case to be taken seriously by official Soviet media and scientific institutions. Today’s Russian UFO researchers still regard this case as “one of the most important UFO sightings in Eastern Europe.”
