On the evening of November 2, 1971, at a rural farm near Delphos, Kansas, 16-year-old Ronald Johnson was tending to his sheep. When he saw an object emitting intense, colorful light land in a nearby field, he feared something was wrong with his eyes. But the result was—an inexplicable physical trace left at the scene, becoming one of the most famous “physical trace” cases in UFO research history.

Ronald said he saw a mushroom-shaped object with rotating red, blue, and yellow lights, making a “hissing sound” as it landed about 40 meters from the house. A few seconds later, the object rose vertically to treetop height, then flew away at “incredible speed” without any sound. The entire process lasted about a few dozen seconds.

Ronald’s parents—Ernest and Erma Johnson—ran out after hearing the commotion. They saw a white ring-shaped area about 3 meters in diameter, forming a perfect circle on the soil surface. The soil surface in this ring area was a white powdery substance, creating a stark contrast with the surrounding dark soil. The strangest part was—this area emitted a faint phosphorescent glow.

The ring-shaped area left on the ground persisted for a long time without disappearing. Even after rain, the white ring remained clearly visible. Ronald later reported eye pain, and the family’s sheep specifically avoided this ring area.

Dr. William Allen, a geologist from the University of Kansas, collected and analyzed soil samples from the site. Test results showed abnormally high calcium content in the soil within the ring area, with microbial activity about 60% lower than normal soil. Most critically, an unknown crystalline substance was found in the soil within the ring area, and the laboratory could not determine its origin.

This case was recorded as “unexplained” by the successor to Project Blue Book—the U.S. Air Force’s Foreign Technology Division. Dr. J. Allen Hynek himself personally inspected the site, noting that this case had “extremely high investigative value” due to independent physical trace evidence.
