On the evening of September 19, 1961, Barney Hill and Betty Hill drove from Montreal, Canada, back to their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. As they passed through the White Mountains near Lancaster, they suddenly spotted a strange glowing object in the sky following their car.

Betty was the first to notice it. She said she saw a “very large star” moving and getting closer. Barney stopped the car and used binoculars to observe. He saw a flat spacecraft with a row of windows on the side, and inside, several humanoid figures in uniforms staring at him. He screamed in fright, “They’re going to capture us!” then immediately got back in the car and sped away.

When the couple returned home, they realized something was seriously wrong—their trip had taken two hours longer than normal, and both felt they had “lost time” without explanation. Betty’s dress had strange torn marks, Barney’s shoes had an unknown pink powder on them, and there was a ring-like mark on Barney’s groin area, as if burned by a laser.

When the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book investigated, Dr. J. Allen Hynek concluded it was just an ordinary sighting. But the problem was—the symptoms persisted. Betty, an active social worker, began having nightmares about being taken aboard a spaceship by aliens for examination. Barney also became anxious and suffered from insomnia.

In 1963, they sought help from renowned Boston psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon. Dr. Simon used hypnotherapy to “unlock” their forgotten memories. The results were shocking—after undergoing separate hypnosis sessions, both recalled the same details: they were taken aboard a spacecraft and subjected to medical examinations by gray-skinned beings with large black eyes.

The most striking part was Betty’s recollection of a “star map”—she said the aliens showed her a star chart. In 1968, teacher Marjorie Fish created a star map based on Betty’s description, which corresponded to the location of the Zeta Reticuli star system. Although this finding is controversial, the Betty Hill star map remains a popular topic in UFO research circles.
