Between July 12 and 29, 1952, a series of mysterious radar echoes appeared over Washington D.C. Radars at Washington National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base simultaneously locked onto multiple unidentified targets, moving at speeds of 1,800 km/h, performing sharp turns and hovering maneuvers.

On the night of July 19, multiple commercial airline pilots also reported seeing these bright orange objects. The Air Force ordered F-94 Starfire fighters to intercept, but the UFOs immediately turned off their lights and disappeared, only to reappear after the fighters left. The incident ultimately led then-Air Force Director of Intelligence John Samford to hold a press conference, acknowledging “there are unexplained radar echoes.”

This event, known as the “Washington UFO Invasion,” marked the first time the Pentagon was forced to publicly acknowledge the UFO phenomenon.
