On the afternoon of December 9, 1965, residents of Kecksburg, Pennsylvania heard a loud bang, then saw a smoke trail streaking across the sky. A giant acorn-shaped metal object crashed into the forest near Kecksburg.

Military personnel quickly arrived and cordoned off the scene. Residents reported seeing mysterious hieroglyphic-like markings on the object. A flatbed truck removed the object that same night. The military’s explanation was a “meteor” or “debris from a Soviet satellite,” but residents insisted it was a man-made metallic object.

The event gained further fame due to its similarity to an episode of the TV series The X-Files. Kecksburg still holds an annual UFO festival to commemorate the incident.
