Josef Allen Hynek is one of the most important figures in the history of UFO research. Originally an astronomer, he was hired by the U.S. Air Force to serve as a scientific consultant for Project Blue Book.
Initially, Hynek was a thorough skeptic, believing that 99% of UFO reports could be explained by conventional phenomena. But as his research deepened, he discovered a small number of cases that were simply unexplainable.

Hynek created the classification system still in use today:

Scientific Contributions
In 1972, Hynek published The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry, the first work to analyze UFOs using scientific methods. He also famously said:
βUFO research is not pseudoscience. But if a scientist publicly studies UFOs, his career is finished.β
